Ah. When I read your post, I was immediately thrown into a memory of listening to an interview with a literary writer who had written an SF novel, and was talking about 'interrogating the genre conventions' when what they were actually doing was a bad pastiche of 'golden age' SF. Just listening to what they were saying about the novel, they thought they'd done something clever, when really, for everything they talked about as unique and challenging norms I reckoned I could pull a dozen books off my shelves that had already done that.
